Botanical Name : Garcinia Cambogia
English Name : Garcinia Cambogia
Ayurvedic Name : Vriksh Amla (Vilayati Imli) Kankushta
Part Used : Fruit
Habitat and Botany : A Fruiting tree grows in evergreen forests in Southern India and Pattani Southern Thailand.
Principal Constituents : The fruit of the tree contain H.C.A. (Hydroxy Citric Acid) which comes in extract is the active constituent/principal.
H.C.A. has positive effect on energy conversion taking place in the body. H.C.A. helps in increasing the capability of the body to store Glycogen in the muscles and the liver. Therefore the calories found our food from carbohydrates are converted into glycogen and less of carbohydrates and calories are converted into fat and the result is less storage of fat. It limits the synthesis of fatty acids in the muscles and liver Lipogenesis (production of fat) by inhibiting the enzyme ATP-citrate-lyase. The fruit contains about 30% acid (Calculated as citric Acid) on the dry basis which is essentially Hydroxy-Citric acid. A decoction of the fruit rind is given in the rheumatism and bowel complaints. The resin possesses purgative properties.
Garcinia in Reslim
Fat from food is stored in adipose tissue through an enzymatic process and H.C.A. inhibits this enzymatic process so less fat is stored in adipose tissue. Hunger feeling is due to livers glycogen level. H.C.A. increases the liver capacity to store more glycogen so lesser feeling of hunger and craving for food, hence food intake is reduced. Thus H.C.A. helps in decreasing the storage of fat.
a) Increasing the Glycogen synthesis
b) Reduce appetite
c) Increase metabolism of fat in the body.
In the late 1960s researchers discovered that this fruit has positive effect on the energy conversion taking place in the body. This sensational discovery lead to an in-depth scientific study by one of the worlds leading pharmaceuticals, Hoffman La Rouche. They concluded that the active component in Garcinia Cambogia was H.C.A. H.C.A. helps increase the capability of the body to store glycogen in the muscles and liver. Therefore more of the calories found in our food converted into glycogen and fewer of the carbohydrates and calories are converted into and stored as fat. Fat from food is stored in the fat cells of the fat tissue. This happens through an enzymatic process. H.C.A. inhibits this enzymatic process so that less fat is stored in the fat tissue. Some hunger feelings are controlled by the liver glycogens level. H.C.A.s effect on increasing the livers capacity to store glycogen can help reduce hunger and cravings and thereby help to reduce food intake. H.C.A. is a natural product without any known side effects. The fruit has been used for centuries as an ingredient in cooking and eastern herbal medicine practices. So H.C.A. decreases the storing of fat, increases the glycogen synthesis, reduces the appetite and increases the basal metabolism. It increases the metabolism of fat in the body. H.C.A. is not habit forming. H.C.A. does not affect the central nervous system (Sleep, Heart rate, Blood pressure), H.C.A. can be used in control and
Sports programs to build up glycogens stored in the liver and the muscles (Glycogen is the most effective and accessible energy source when the body needs fuel for physical activity).
Advantage : Many Cardiovascular risk factors are associated with obese people, Hypertension, Hyperlipemia, etc. These risk levels increase when there is increased level of fat in the blood stream of the obese person. By controlling fat, it lessens these risk factors. H.C.A. is the source for a revolutionary natural ingredient which is currently a rage in America, Japan, Europe and other Western countries. The extract is effective, non-toxic, tasteless and odorless and has been formulated into several natural diet formulations. The extract is used in various foods and pharmaceuticals, as it is effective in treating obesity, for reducing cholesterol and controlling appetite. It is a well-established, fat-burning agent and is known to be beneficial in weight management.
Safety : It is safe to use because it has been used in cooking for many centuries. No significant information is available regarding side effects.
Caution : According to Ayurveda, Herbs are taken in combination with other herbs to neutralize the toxicity of one herb with the opposing effect of the other or to enhance the particular effect of one herb with the help of other.
