Habitat and Botany : Shatavari, Asparagus racemosus, is a climbing plant which grows in low forest areas throughout India. A much branched spinus under-shrub with tuberous, short rootstock bearing numerous fusiform, succulent roots. The major constituents of Asparagus plant are Shatavarins I-IV, Sistosterol, Asparagamine.

Asparagus is useful as Antiseptic, Galactogenic, Mucilaginous, Antidiarrhoeal, Refrigerant, Diuretic, Antidysenteric, Nutritive Tonic, Demulcent, Galactagogue, Aphrodisiac, Antispasmodic, Stomachic and antirheumatic.

Healing Qualities

The healing qualities of Asparagus racemosus are useful to a wide array of ailments. Shatavari is well known for its effects on the female reproductive system. Being a rejuvenating herb, it's restorative action is beneficial in woman's complaints. For balancing Hormonal system of women, Shatavari may be used for regulating menstruation and ovulation, improving lactation, decreasing morning sickness, infertility, Menopause, Leucorrhea, inflammation of sexual organs, and general sexual debility. Containing Phytoestrogens it may be of help in menopausal symptoms, but this may, on the other hand, aggravate a woman whose fibrocystic breasts are sensitive to estrogen.
