Fenugreek Powder (Trigonella foenum-graecum)

Other Names: Trigonella Foenum Graecum, Methi 

Fenugreek Powder: It is an important ingredient in vegetable, dhal (lentils) and meat dishes eaten in India.

Action and uses as per Ayurveda: Hair tonic, stimulates the metabolism. Helps to maintain healthy blood sugar level, blood pressure level, blood cholesterol. Because of its high iron content it is also given in cases of anemia, as a digestive aid, and to promote lactation in women. The seeds have been used as an internal emollient for inflammation of the digestive tract and as an external poultice for boils and abscesses. It contains diosgenin, a compound used as a starting material for sex hormones. It helps in constipation, sore throats, tuberculosis and bronchitis. It is a powerful expectorant and breaks up respiratory congestions. The seed is a carminative (taken to relieve flatulence).

Note: The quality and part of the plant used are highly important in the manufacturing and processing of herbal powders. Certain parts are more potent and effective than others. Fiber and other unwanted material should be removed as they do not have any herbal properties (except to increase the weight and quantity).

The properties of single herb may differ from region to region. Ripening and timely harvesting are yet another important factor for the potency of any particular herb.
