Causes of Pollution

Pollution's attack on the body is multi-pronged. Various pollutants cause slow and chronic injuries to almost all-vital organs of the body due to their poisonous infections. The body in due course begins to suffer from low resistance, low energy and low vitality. This vicious circle retards body functioning and brings in premature aging.

Symptoms, complex due to various pollutants, include; fatigue and lassitude, generalized aches and pains in muscles, dryness of skin, abdominal discomfort of the eyes, headaches and other non-specific central nervous system disturbances.

Scientific Information of Formulation:

1. Boerhaavia diffusa: Bitter, Astringent, Cooling, Stomachic, Laxative, Diuretic, Expectorant, Antipyretic and Rejuvenating, Cardio tonic, Age-sustainer and anabolic agent. Boerhaavia Diffusa has been found to enhance survival during stress.

It stimulates the function of heart and kidneys and is specific for Jaundice, Diabetes, General debility, Edema and other ailments caused by morbid Kapha (Water) and Pitta (Fire).

The alkaloids present in the herb were found to lower serum uric acid levels. The herb proved useful as a haemostatic and growth promoter when milk fortified with it was fed to some children.

Punarnavoside shows significant anti-fibrinolytic activity.

An anti-viral agent, active against spherical and tubular viruses.

The alkaloid extracted from B. Diffusa stimulated the amylase activities; higher the concentration of the extract, the greater was the activity. This study was conducted to examine the use of B. Diffusa as an appetizer, as a digestive factor and also a remedial measure of intestinal colic.

Clinically, B. Diffusa proved to be a useful and safe herb in patients of nephritic syndrome. The observations reveal equivalent diuretic effects of Furosemide. B. Diffusa increases the serum protein level and reduces urinary protien excretion in patients of nephrotic syndrome. An increase in the level of immunoglobulin and decrease in immune complex was also noted after one month of medication in some patients.

2. Curcuma Longa: Antidotal, Antidermatosis, Antiseptic, Germicidal, Carminative, Stimulant and Tonic.

It is helpful in disorders arising due to morbid Vatta (Air), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Water), Eye related problems, Ulcers, Edema, Anemia and also in purifying the blood by destroying the pathogenic organisms. It is also useful in Cough, Cold Bronchitis and liver infections.

The rhizomes of C. longa exhibited intense anti-hepatotoxic action. C. longa powder has been found to appreciably increase mucin content of gastric juice in rabbits and indicated its beneficial effects as a therapeutic agent in gastric disorders. It is an antacid and in small doses acts as a carminative, stomachic, appetizer and tonic. Mixed with warm milk or warm water, it is said to be beneficial in common cold. WHO (SEARO Health paper 19) recommended C. longa powder with warm milk or warm water during fever, cold, malaise. Curcuma longa has been reported to have significant anti- inflammatory activities. It has also been found having anti-allergic properties.

Besides lowering the serum cholesterol and blood sugar level, C. longa and its derivative cur cumin also act as anti-oxidants to scavenge serum peroxides to prevent atherosclerotic changes.

Due to anti-inflammatory activity of Cur cumin, the powdered rhizome of C. longa has been found to be effective in the treatment of sprain and inflammations.

Oral administration of the powdered rhizomes of C. longa has been found to produce significant relief in cases of asthma and cough.

Strong antioxidant effects of several components of C. longa result in an inhibition of carcinogenesis. Extracts of the spice may play a role as hemoprotectants, which limit the development of Cancers.

Scientific Reference from books:-C. longa, fed at 0.5, 1.0, 5.0 and 10.0 percent dose, inhibited Benz (alpha)-Pyrenees (Bp) mediated mutagen city in bacteria indicating that C. longa has anti-mutagen city activity. It did not produce any side effects in rats and can be regarded as a chemo protective agent.

Curcumin I, II and III insolated from C. longa were compared for their cytotoxic, tumour, reducing and antioxidant activities. All curcuminolids inhibited the tumour growth but Curcumin III produced maximum increase in life span (74.1 percent). The Curcuminolids also inhibited lipid per oxidation.

3. Glycyzrrhiza glabra: Glycyzrrhiza glabra (Yasti-madhu) acts as Age-sustainer, Vitalizor, Antidotal, Antipruritus, Antidyspepsic, Anti-body ache, Haemostatic, Refrigerant, Anti-emetic, Tonic, cooling, demulcent, expectorant, diuretic, emmenagouge and gentle laxative. Alleviates vatta (air) and pitta(fire). Promotes eyesight (Chakshushya). It cleanses and heals the ulcer (Vrana sbodhan ropanam).

Glycyzrrhiza glabra is found useful in peptic ulcers. It is used in China for strengthening muscles and bones, increasing physical strength and for Curcumin wounds. Having a great number of recipies, this herb stands next to Ginseng, in importance, in the Chinese pharmacy.

The dose of prednisolone can be reduced considerably, without reappearance of the lesions, with the oral administration of the powdered root of Glycyzrrhiza glabra in 5 cases of pemphigus (lesions of the skin), who had been kept free from the bullae with prednisolone. The potentiating effect of Glycyrrgiza glabra appeared to be due to its inhibitory effect on the metabolic degradation of prednisolone.

The therapeutic effect of interferon (IFN) as well as SNMC, a derivative of Glycyrrhizic acid, has been tried in-patient with chronic type C hepatitis. IFN proved quite effective but its efficacy was limited to 60 percent of patients. Combination therapy of INF and SNMC proved to be more promising antiviral therapy.

The roots and rhizomes of Glycyzrrhiza uralensis; G. Glabra, and commercial specimen from various countries were analyzed on the basis of their phenolic constituents. Extracts of some licorice specimens inhibited 40-56 percent of Xanthenes Oxidase activity at the concentration of 30 micro gm/ml. Extracts of some licorice specimens also showed inhibitory effects on Monoamine Oxidase (44-66 per cent) at the concentration of 30 micro gm/ml, which were slightly weaker than that of Harmine Hydrochloride.

4. Leptadenia reticulata: Age-sustainer, Vitalisor, Antiasthmatic.Leptadenia reticulata (Jivanti): Balances three Doshas (humors). Charak(Ayurvedic scholar)treats it as an important Rasayana herb (the medicine promoting health and longevity) and Vagbhatta includes it among the ten herb that constitute the Jivaniya gama (the vitalizing group).

Leptadenia reticulata is cooling, sweet, aphrodisiac, rejuvenate and easy to digest. Poisonous affections and burning sensations are relived by the use of the herbs. It promotes eyesight. In Ayurveda, it was known as Chakshushya (eye tonic). According to chark (famous Ayurvedic scholar, Leptadenia reticulata is the best among vegetables. In Gujarat and Kathaiwar (states of India), people use it as a pot herb for chest and eye diseases.

Leptadenia reticulata is stimulant and restorative. Used in infections of nose and throat. Leaves and roots are useful for skin infections and wounds.

5. Ocimum sanctum: Calefacient, Antiasthmatic, Carminative, Antipyretic, Diphoretic and expectorant. Leaf juice of Ocimum Sanctum is a domestic remedy for infantile cough, cold, bronchitis, catarrh, dysentery and diarrhea. Infusion of juice is given in gastric diseases of children and in hepatic infections. It is very helpful in skin infections like itches, ringworm's, ulcers and poisonous infections. In Ayurveda, Ocimum sanctmum is widely used for treating fevers. The effect of Ocimum sanctum on the humoral immune responses in animals, under experimental conditions, was studied by Mediratta PK et al. Ocimum sanctmum enhanced anti-SRBC haemagglutination titre and IGE antibody titre, as measured by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis in rats. Antigen-induced histamine release was significantly inhibited by Ocimum sanctmum, which also antagonized responses to various spasmogens on isolated guinea-pig ileum. Thus it appears that Ocimum sanctmum modulates the humoral immune responses by acting at various levels in the immune mechanism such as antibody production, release of mediators of hypersensitivity reactions and tissue responses to these mediators in the target organs.

The anti-asthmatic activity of a 50 per cent aqueous ethanol extract of dried leaves, and the volatile and fixed oils of Ocimum sanctum were evaluated against histamine and acetylcholine-induced pre-convulsive Dysponea (PCD) in guinea-pigs.

Ocimum sanctum leaves were tried in cases of bronchial asthma and stress related hypertension. In both these conditions the drug was found to be highly efficacious. Ocimum sanctum leaves were also found to be an immuno-modulator in man, as tested by 2-4-dinitro-chloro benzene (skin test).

Therapeutic effect of Ocimum sanctum leaves on hypertension was tested on rats and dogs with induced hypertension and then on humoral subjects suffering from essential hypertension. 60 ml of 75 percent leaf extract administered orally in two halves resulted in a fall of diastolic as well as systolic pressure to the normal level with no adverse effects. Effect of alcoholic extract of Ocimum sanctum was studied on the changes in central neurotransmitter levels and enzyme activity in the brain, induced by stressors.

6. Piper longum: Appetizer, Antisaturative, Antitussive, Antiasthmatic, Antispasmodic, Calefacient.

Piper longum (Pippali) is an important medhya Rasayana (brain tonic) capable of improving intellect and memory power and also of recuperation during diseases. It is reportedly acrid, hot, light, digestive, appetizer, aphrodisiac and tonic. It cures cough, Dysponea, colic, indigestion, anemia and dispels cardiac, splenic disorders and loss of appetite. It rehabilitates vitiated Vatta (Air) and Kapha (Water).

Piperine, an active palkaloidal constituent of the extract from Piper longum and Piper nigrum, was evaluated for its anti-hepatotoxic potential. The plant principle exerted a significant protection against tertbutyl hydro peroxide and carbon tetrachloride hepatotoxicity.

7. Withania somnifera: Anabolic agent, Tonic and Invigorative. It enhances survival during stress and increases body weight (in terms of health) and hemoglobin, besides retarding the aging process. It is highly esteemed as a Rasayana (rejuvenating) drug by Ayurvedic physicians, which is capable of imparting long life, youthful vigor and good intellectual powers. It is bitter in taste, hot in action and alleviates vatta and kapha.

In the Indian system of Medicine, Ashwagandha is used as a tonic in geriatrics. It is prescribed for all kinds of weaknesses and nervous disorders and is supposed to promote strength and vigor and is regarded as an aphrodisiac and a rejuvenator.

Ashwagandha has prolonged hypertensive, Brady cardiac and respiratory actions. Ashwagandha is very effective in the treatment of anxiety neurosis. The methanolic extracts of roots of Withania somnifera (known to possess CNS depressant properties and used in the Indian system of medicine for insanity, epilepsy and hypertension) has been shown to potentiate, pentrobarbitonie-induced hypnosis and pentylene tetrazol (PTZ) - induced seizure latency.

Ashwagandha was found to be an excellent haemostatic in the study. Ashwagandha root is used in senile, debility, in all cases of general debility, nervous exhaustion, brainfag, loss of muscular energy and spermatorrhoea. It infuses fresh energy and vigor into a system worn out owing to any constitutional diseases or from over work; thus prevents premature decay.
