Concept

Human brain is a remarkable organ which has the power to retain information called as memory. Memory is the cognitive process of mind. This memory may get vitiated due to several factors and then the person is unable to make full use of his/her potentials. Ayurveda considers both body and mind to be closely inter linked. The brain is the organ that communicates to the rest of the body to perform all major activities. Brain also controls the healing power of the body. Thus for good memory, both psychic and physical factors are needed. Ayurveda describes three aspects to mental performance-dhi (Learning and comprehension), Dhriti (Rsetention of knowledge), and Smriti (Memory or recall). For maximum outcome of the brain, coordination between dhi (Learning and comprehension), Dhriti (Retention of knowledge), and Smriti (Memory or recall) needs to be at peak and optimal. With the advancement of age and lack of proper exercise, our body organs age and lose youth. That's why we are unable to concentrate.

Our brain has three parts - the Conscious, Subconscious and Unconscious mind. All three forms are associated with memory. The conscious mind is the part of contemporary memory. The subconscious mind is related to those memories which can be remembered with great difficulty. The memories, which have been forgotten and the person is unable to recollect in spite of his best efforts are included in the unconscious mind and they appear in the form of dreams.

According to Ayurveda, most memory problems are related to either Kapha Dosha (Water Vitiation) or Vata Dosha (Air Vitiation). Vitiation of Kapha (Water) results in a heavy feeling and a dull mind. In this Kapha (Water) vitiation, the triglyceride level rises and makes the blood thick. Thus the circulation of blood to the brain slows down. In Vata (Air) Vitiation, person doesn't remember the previously held conversation even. So in order to improve memory problems, it is best to balance Vata (Air) and Kapha (Water) Doshas in the body.

There are three Doshas (Humors) of mind like three humors of the body:

  1. Satva - Most healthy and balanced state of mind.
  2. Rajas - Excited state of mind.
  3. Tamas - Depressed state of mind.

Weak psyche or psychic energy

The relation of somatic and mind Doshas (Humors) are:

Vata (Air) is Rajas (Excited state of mind) predominant Dosha (Humor).

Kapha (Water) is Tamas (Depressed state of mind) predominant Dosha (Humor).

Pitta (Fire) is Satva (Healthy state of mind) predominant Dosha (Humor).

From Ayurveda ancient text-books

In Ayurvedic texts certain herbs have been mentioned to enhance cognitive-power, specifically memory, memory development, learning and concentration, and to provide relief to patients with anxiety or epileptic disorders. The Medhya class of herbs enhances the coordination between the three factors-Dhi, Dhriti, and Smriti-by providing powerful nourishment for the brain. Some well-known Ayurvedic herbs that promote health and functioning of the mind include Shankhapushpi (Bindweed), Brahmi (Indian Hyssop), and Ashwagandha (Winter Cherry).

In 29th chapter of Agnipuran it is written that consuming 240 mg to 500 mg of Brahmi powder with milk every morning increases the memory power. Ayurvedic scriptures like Charaka and Sushruta say that consuming 3 gm of green vegetable soup (Made form Brahmi) increases the memory power. Beshajya Ratnavali-a famous Ayurvedic literature says that regular consumption of Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, Almond, etc. strengthens the brain cells and provides coolness to the brain. They are helpful in improving memory power and curing nervous related problems.

An Ayurvedic literature called Chikitsa Chandrodaya, the importance of Brahmi in the form of a chemical is written. Regular consumption of Brahmi improves the capacity to think and understand.

Brahmi is perhaps the most valuable herb for its memory enhancement properties. Brahmi may have several chemicals that promote the protein synthesis process in the nerve and the brain cells, which is directly responsible for developing the mental capacity of the brain. Brahmi can make a person think clearer, and hence the memory becomes more vivid. Brahmi also increases the grasping power of the brain, due to which people can understand and assimilate information easily.

In adults, Brahmi helps in relaxing and soothing the cells of the brain, and brings it to a normal state of functioning. Thus, Brahmi is a valuable anti-anxiety agent and an antidepressant. Brahmi oil is quite often used to massage the head. This sort of massage immediately puts the mind at rest and the mental abilities rise drastically after its use.
