"Noni" is the native Hawaiian name for the small evergreen tree Morinda citrifolia, and its fruit. The tree grows vigorously from India to Malaysia, up through Fiji and eastern Polynesia. It is known in Vietnam, Africa and the Caribbean where it is called the "painkiller tree." Australians call it "cheese fruit" from the overpowering smell. Dyes are extracted from noni roots and young fruits, and all parts root, bark, leaf, fruit and flower are used medicinally. In 1992, Dr. Arthur W. Whistler of the National Botanical Garden, Hong Kong, wrote that noni was the "most widely and commonly used medicinal plant prior to the European era.
The Sanskrit name of "Achuka" for Morinda Citrifolia, meaning longevity, resonates with Western research findings. Noni is renowned for its unique ability to improve opposite conditions and virtually any ailment from which the body suffers, i.e., Noni has been hailed as a cure for low as well as high blood pressure. It exhibits promising anti-cancer and immune system strengthening potential. An herbal fruit of India, Noni has been shown to help ailments such as high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes and sinus problems. Medicinally, fruits are considered tonic, febrifuge, emmenagogue, anti-congestive, blood purifying.
Ayurveda adds that Noni is a kapha (water) stabilizer and helps to remove excess pitta (fire) from the body. Body systems, which have all been effectively influenced by Noni are circulatory, digestive, respiratory, integumentary (skin), endocrine, immune, nervous and skeletal systems. Research also, has shown that all parts of the Morinda Citrifolia plant, roots, seeds, flowers, leaves and fruit have a variety of positive health applications.
Noni is believed to have arrived in Tahiti, Hawaii and other Pacific islands at least 1,500 years ago, coming eastward from India and surrounding regions. Who brought the plant to those areas? Though it is not known for sure, expert s believe that it could have been immigrants from the Marquesas Islands that introduced Noni to those areas.
Throughout Polynesia and India, the fruit and leaves are a source of food. There is ample evidence to suggest that ancient Polynesians (as well as their descendants) used Noni for food; for cloth dye; and most importantly, for its medicinal properties. Medicinally, fruits are considered tonic, febrifuge, emmenagogue, anti-congestive, blood-purifying and more. Charred unripe fruits mixed with sea-salt relieve diseased gums. This prescription is identical in Polynesian and Ayurvedic systems. Leaves are used for infantile diarrhea and dysentery and to heal wounds, ulcers and the pain of gout. Ayurveda adds that noni is a kapha (water element) stabilizer and helps to remove excess pitta (fire element) from the body. Elkins gives an impressive list of body systems which "have all been effectively influenced by noni: circulatory, digestive, respiratory, integumentary (skin), endocrine, immune, nervous and skeletal.
In Thailand it is used to relieve vomiting and nausea. In Fiji, it has been used to treat ringworm, hemorrhoids, and oral problems such as bad breath, hoarseness, and mouth ulcers. In the Cook Islands, noni juice has been used to treat urinary tract infections and abdominal swellings. The plant is also found throughout India where the fruit is claimed to be laxative and emmenagogue. Unfortunately, the noni fruit has an unpleasant taste and noxious smell and is therefore not eaten as nourishment except during times of famine.
Research shows that all parts of the Morinda Citrifolia plant-roots, seeds, flowers, leaves, and fruit-may have a variety of positive health implications.
