English Name : Gum of silk cotton tree

Habitat : Throughout the hottest forest regions of India

Description: It is a large tree. Leaves are large -petiole is longer than the leaflets, secondary petiole is 2.5 cm long, leaflets (3-7) are lanceolate,entire.Flowers are large,red in colour.Occasionally white, appearing before the leaves. Fruit-capsule is 15-17 cm long, ovoid, downy, it is 5 valved and from within it is silky.

Constituents: Contain Tannic and Gallic acid

Action and Uses

Gum is stringent and Styptic, Demulcent, tonic, slightly diuretic and aphrodisiac. Used for Diarrhea, Dysentery, menorrhagia and other affections in which Astringents like Catechu are useful. It is also useful in Calculus affections and chronic inflammation and ulceration of the bladder and kidneys including strangury and all other forms of dysuria except those depending on mechanical causes, weakness of the genital organs.

This drug is a Rasayana. It is a component of Dashamulkwatha. Generally the gum is used in vata diseases. It is used in diarrhoea, dysentery, menorrhagia and leucorrhoca. The gum contains a large proportion of tannic and gailic acids and may he successfully used in cases requiring astringents. The fruits as well as the gum are reported to be aphrodisiac. The ground spike-paste is recommended for acne.
