Ayurvedic Concept

The fluid in Menses is mentioned as "Artava" in Ayurveda. It is a periodical vaginal bleeding occurring in females between the age groups of 12-13 years to 50 years approximately. This period is the period of fertility in females. Any problem in this cyclic bleeding will hamper the fertility as well as the physical and psychological conditions of the lady. This Artava (Menses) is also affected by different Doshas (Humors). According to Ayurveda, Vata (Air), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Water) along with blood, play important roles in the etiopathogenesis of abnormality of menstrual blood.

In Ayurveda, menses (i.e. the flow of the menstrual period) is considered to be the excess Pitta (Fire) which flows out of the body. It is called as Raja. Hence the menstrual flow is also called as Raja Pravritti. Though menstruation is a typically Pitta (Fire) phenomenon, effects on the Vata (Air) and the Kapha (Water) are also seen. Some women have insomnia and mood swings during their periods. This is Vata (Air) vitiation. Some women gain weight. This is Kapha (Water) vitiation.

Common Symptoms

Vata (Air) type: Menses vitiated by Vata (Air) is red-black or dark in color. Thin, frothy and very small clots mixed with liquid come out. It is excreted slowly with piercing type of pain.

Pitta (Fire) type: Menses is not of reddish color, smells like pus (Foul smell), blood or putrid smell. The excretion is hot and associated with severe burning.

Kapha (Water) type: Menstrual blood vitiated by Kapha (Water) is too thick, slippery or lubricous, unctuous and settles down if put in water.

Rakta (Blood) type: Ifartava (Menses) is vitiated by blood; it smells like a dead body. Amount of bleeding is more and it is like fresh blood associated with heat and burning sensation.

Modern View

What is Menstruation?

Menstruation is the term used for the natural monthly cycle of periods in the female body. When the unfertilized eggs are ejected out of the reproductive system along with blood and several other tissue cells, it is called as menstrual cycle or periods. This flow happens once a month. The flow is more on one particular day of the month and lasts for three days. This period may differ from female to female depending upon her body and hormones. A regular period may range from 20 to 35 days according to the individual. For calculating regularity of the cycle one should count from day 1 of cycle to the first day of next cycle. If this duration is roughly same in every count then, it is termed as regular cycle.

Irregular/Scanty period is the term used when the number of days counted are less or more in each cycle or the blood flow is less or more in each cycle or there is a missed period.

Amenorrhea: When there is the absence of menstrual bleeding and sexual characteristics like breast development and pubic hair in a girl by the age of 14 years or the absence of menstrual bleeding with normal development of secondary sexual characteristics in a girl by the age of 16 years, it is termed as Primary Amenorrhea.

And Secondary amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual bleeding for 3 or more months in a woman who had been menstruating, in the absence of pregnancy, lactation (The ability to breastfeed), cycle suppression with systemic hormonal contraceptive (Birth control) Pills, or Menopause. Delayed puberty is when the boy or girl has passed the usual age of the beginning of puberty and shows no physical signs that puberty are beginning. Dysmenorrheal is the condition of severe pain, cramps and discomfort before, during and after menstrual cycle.

Oligomenorrhea is the condition of infrequent or very light menstruation in a woman with previously normal periods.
