Habitat : It is a native of Greece, Asia, Syria and Persia.
Uses: The galls are imported into India. They result from the puncture and deposit of an egg or eggs of an insect Cynips Gallae Tinctoria on the leaves and buds of various species of oak.. In the beginning these galls are Brownish in color and turns green and when the insect present in it comes out by making a hole the color turns out greenish to whitish. The light green color galls are heavy in weight and used for medicinal use.
Constituents: The principal chemical constituents of galls is Tannin (Gallo - Tannic acid) 50 to 70% and about 3% of Gallic acid. Action: Galls are powerfully Astringent and Styptic. Though Oak galls contains tannic acid, it would be an error, however, to administer pure tannic acid in place of the entire drug. Tannic acid is absorbed in the small intestine, whereas it is protective by Cellulose in the drugs containing tannic acids so that it reaches the lower intestinal sections unchanged. It unfolds its action only after absorption into the lymp- stream, influencing and contracting the smooth Musculature.
Galls are used as powder or decoction. It is useful in Diarrhea, Gleet, and long standing Gonorrhea, leucorrhoea and vaginal discharges. Its contracting actions is very useful in all Diarrhea's, blood spitting, hematuria, profuse menstruation and Gonorrhea. It is a popular medicine in Chronic Gastric Catarrh, Menstrutionimia and Enuresis, Nocturna. Apart from its property to diminish Albuminuria, good results have also been observed in renal Hemorrhage and Spleen swelling. Used in Intertrigo, impetigo and eczema. In prolapsus (descent) of the rectum, the daily use of an enema or Decoction of galls proves useful and in the case of children a pad saturated with decoction may be kept over the parts after the protruded bowel had been returned. The same treatment is also applicable in cases of prolapsus of the uterus, the decoction being used as a vaginal injection, useful in all internal hemorrhages, in excessive secretions from different parts of the bodynna.
