The food we eat is digested by Agni (Digestive Fire ) or body fire which is present in our body. The Agni or body fire helps to digest the food which is consumed. The Agni (Digestive Fire) is mainly situated in Jathara or in upper part of digestive system and is called as Jatharagni. The Agni (Digestive Fire) is further categorized as Bhutagni (which digests the 5 pancha mahabhuta factors present in food), Dhatwagni (The agni present in tissues which help them to absorb required nutrients), Malaagni(The agni which helps in formation of body wastes like stools, Sweat and Urine). The Jatharagni controls bhutagni, dhatwagni and malaagni. Thus, Ayurveda approach of digestion explains cellular metabolism too.
The factors which help agni to digest the food completely are: Thridoshas–Vata (Air), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Water) help agni to digest the food. When food is completely digested by all the agnis, the body tissues will be well nourished and one is blessed with attractive complexion, Glow, Longevity, Strength, Good Health, Growth, Enthusiasm, Vitality and overall healthy development of body and mind.
According to Ayurveda, Strength, Health, Enthusiasm, Complexion and Luster of Skin, Vital essence like heat (Temperature of the body) and the life sustaining breaths (Prana) depend upon the "Jathara-Agni", i.e. digestive power of the body. Weak digestive power (Jathara-Agni) leads to indigestion (Manda-Agni). The undigested food particles in stomach lead to the formation of ama (Undigested food material), i.e. free radicals. Ama (Undigested Food Material) is considered as the main causative factor for the pathogenesis of various problems occurring in the body. This Ama (Undigested Food Material), combined with different doshas (Humors), reaches different parts of the body and later creates problems relating to those parts. For example, in terms of doshas (Humors), when ama (Undigested food material) remains stagnant in the gastrointestinal tract, it causes the formation of gas and development of various parasites and worms.
The indigestion occurs when Agni (Digestive Fire) is imbalanced by the factors (Tridoshas-Vata ( Air), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (water))which helps digestive fire to digest food. The variations of Agni (Digestive Fire) due to tridoshas are of 4 types:
Samagni (Balanced Agni): The agni who is well balanced due to balanced tridoshas indicate the condition called Samagni. Samagni digests the food completely and nourishes the body tissues very well.
Vishamaagni (Varying Agni): When vata is predominant digestive fire gets imbalanced. The food gets digested occasionally. Vata (Air) increasing foods and lifestyles lead to this condition. This variation of digestive fire causes Constipation, Flatulence, Pain in Abdomen and other Vata Predominant diseases. The indigestion caused by this type of digestive fire is called Vistabdhajeerna.
Teekshnagni (Increased Digestive Fire): This variation of agni occurs due to predominance of Pita (Agni/Fire). Pita (Agni/Fire) increasing foods and lifestyle cause this variation. This variation of digestive fire causes increased Hunger, Thirst, Acidity, Heart Burn and Loose Motions. The indigestion thus caused is called as Vidagdajeerna.
Mandagni (Decreased Digestive Fire): As increased moistness reduces the intensity of fire, the increased Kapha (Water) reduces the intensity of digestive fire. Kapha increasing foods and lifestyle cause this variation. Feeling Heaviness of body, swelling of eyelids (Lower), belching which emit the smell of food consumed and water brash are few symptoms which of indigestion caused by decreased digestive fire. The indigestion caused by reduced digestive fire is called as amajeerna.
The decreased fire improperly digests the food and this indigested food is sticky in nature and improperly nourishes tissues, causing weakness of body. This sticky improperly digested food is called Ama. Ama due to its sticky nature blocks the channels of Body, vitiates Doshas, Contaminates Tissues, Imbalance body functions and cause diseases.
Vata (air) Predominance: Some of the various conditions are tetanus, cervical spondylosis, locked jaws, hysteria, paralysis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis. The associated symptoms are abdominal pain, flatulence, constipation, syncope and body aches.
Pita (fire) Predominance: Some of the various conditions are hormongiopathies, leprosy, malignancy, anemia, urinary tract infection, and inflammation and abscess formation. The associated symptoms are burns, burning sensation in the body and increased sweating and fever.
Kapha (water) Predominance: Some of the various conditions are diabetes mellitus, bronchial asthma, cough and anorexia. The associated symptoms are heaviness and stiffness in the body, nausea, vomiting, swelling under the eyes and face and belching.
A combination of Hing (Asafoetida) combined with other Ayurvedic herbs and distillates of aromatic plants, helps to maintain the proper function of the Vata (Air) high gastrointestinal tract. This combination is primarily used for imbalances of Apana Vayu (The downward moving energy of the body). Apana is responsible for eliminative functions such as Defecation, Micturition, Flatulence, Menstruation, Ejaculation and giving birth. Excellent for Vata (Air), this combination can be taken as natural supplement for Gas, Indigestion, Constipation and other common problems associated with poor digestion and formation of gas. This also checks the production of Ama (Undigested Food).
