Latin Name : Saracaka Indica

English Name : Asoka Tree

Ayurvedic Name : Ashoka

Parts used : Bark, Extract

Habitat : Cultivated in gardens throughout India. The alcoholic extract which is soluble in hot water contains a fair amount of tannin and probably an organic substance containing Iron.

Properties and Uses: Saracaka Indica is highly astringent, Uterine sedative, Household remedy for menorrhagia, Leucorrhoea, Internal piles (Bleeding Haemorrhoids) and dysentry (Haemorrhagic). Saracaka Indica stimulates uterus making contraction more frequent and prolonged without producing tonic contractions like Ergot and Pituitary. It acts directly on the muscular fibers of the uterus. It has a stimulating effect on the Endometrium and the ovarian tissue, useful in uterine affections, especially in Menorrhagia due to uterine fibroids and other causes.

Its use in treatment of excessive uterine bleeding is extensive in India. The plant is used also in dysmenorrhoea and for depression in women. Bleeding from piles is reduced with the use of the plant extract.
