Supports proper function of the lungs. Strengthens and rejuvenates the respiratory system.
Cough known as "Kasa" in ancient Ayurvedic science is the most common frequent problem of respiratory system caused by stimulation of sensory nerves in the mucosa of the pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchi. Sensitization of the normal cough reflex is also observed following with viral infections, esophageal reflux, postnasal drip, cough variant asthma and in patients taking ACE inhibitors. The main biological factor involved in this is Vata (air). The Vata, getting obstructed in the lower channels, becomes lodged in the upper channels and taking on the function of the Udana Vata (one of the five types of Vata) i.e. expiratory function, gets localized in throat and chest entering all the cavities in the head. It fills them up and causes hunching convulsive movements of the body, jaws, sides of the neck and eyes. It distorts and stiffens the eyes, back, chest and sides of the body and then leads to cough, which is either dry or accompanied with expectoration of phlegm. The characteristic sound and pain of cough is produced as a result, particularly, of the obstruction to the forceful movement of the Vata (air) signs and symptoms due to different biological factors and can be summarized as:
Due to Vata (air): Pain in the chest, sides, cardiac region and head, alteration in voice, dryness of chest, throat and mouth, horripilation, faintness, rattling sound in throat, depression, hollow sound of cough, weakness, agitation and stupor. The cough is dry and the person expectorates with great difficulty, dry sputum and after expectoration the cough is diminished. It is alleviated by unctuous, acidic, salty, hot foods and drinks and also aggravated at the time of completion of digestion.
Due to Pitta (fire): There is yellowish expectoration, icteric tinge (yellowish color) of the eyes, bitter taste in the mouth, disorder of voice, sensation of fuming in chest, thirst, burning, stupor, anorexia and giddiness. Due to prolonged coughing, the person is dazed and expectorates sputum mixed with bile.
Due to Kapha (water): Weakness of the digestive system, anorexia, vomiting, coryza, nausea, heaviness, horripillation, sweet taste in the mouth, increased secretion and asthenia. The person expectorates dense, sweet, sticky and thick sputum. While coughing there is not much pain but chest is over full.

The benefits of these herbs are to make the secretion thin and help in the dilation of alveoli's and bronchi thus helping in expectoration, soothing the respiratory system and are useful in relieving dry coughs. They may help decrease asthmatic attacks and allergic conditions acting as a histamine agent. They are useful in relieving chest pain associated with cough, pleurisy (inflammation of the pleura) and have anti tubercular properties, decreasing the inflammatory process of the respiratory system and mucoid secretion, expanding bronchial vessels. They are used in chronic coughs & colds, decreasing the purutent (foul smelling) discharge.
